It was all the way back in 2019 that Jorge Masvidal sucker punched Leon Edwards backstage at the O2 Arena. “Gamebred” was fresh off his main event knockout win over Darren Till, while “Rocky” had just gutted out a split decision over Gunnar Nelson in the co-main. Edwards kept coming around to try and goad Masvidal into a fight. The last time he did it, Masvidal punched him in the face. “So I give him the three-piece with a soda,” Masvidal told ESPN in the aftermath of the incident. “And then just glide out of there.” Now, seven years later, Masvidal claims a real fight with Edwards may finally come to fruition. “I’ve been talking to the UFC [about a comeback fight],”Masvidal told MMA Junkie. “Could be this year, could be early next year. Leon is definitely a prospect. Leon is definitely someone I would like to go back in and close that chapter out.” The only problem: Masvidal has been talking about returning to the UFC for years. “Gamebred” asked for and received a conditional release from the promotion back in 2023. He had a short list of opponents he was allowed to box, and ended up getting stiffed on his pay after fighting Nate Diaz to a controversial majority decision loss in Anaheim. Not getting paid a good chunk of your purse is a good way to remember there are upsides to fighting with the UFC, but the UFC never seemed all that interested in bringing back Masvidal, who is now 0-5 over the last six years. They hooked him up with CBS Sports’ Deep Waters podcast, which is the appropriate kind of return to the spotlight for an aging 41-year-old fighter. A comeback run? Not so much. Any other promotee out there would book Masvidal vs. Edwards in a second. There’s still juice in the squeeze, even if it’s debatable how much both men still have in their tank. The UFC aren’t the types to book an aging veteran legacy fight, though. The one mode they seem to have is wood chipper mode, feeding yesterday’s stars to tomorrow’s potential names. Masvidal vs. Edwards just doesn’t fit their playbook.
