Labour has wiped out Reform UK’s poll lead after enjoying a surge in support under new leader Andy Burnham. Research by DeltaPoll put both parties on 28%, well ahead of the Tories on 18%. It marks a major turnaround on a month ago, when Labour were on just 20%, fully 8 points behind Nigel Farage’s party. The dramatic increase in support for Labour has coincided with Keir Starmer being replaced as the party’s leader and prime minister by Burnham. At the same time, Reform’s support has stalled as Farage has struggled to answer questions about a £5 million gift he received from Thailand-based crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. That came after he unveiled plans to cut VAT from electricity bills from October 1 in a move which is expected to save householders around £45 a year. Bus fares across England are also set to be capped at £2, while HuffPost UK revealed the government will also cut business rates for the hospitality sector by 20%. Burnham told cabinet that the government must give people “a sense that help is coming”. “What can we do just to take that little bit of pressure off people’s shoulders, just to give them that little extra sense that help is coming so that they can have that bit of hope that things are getting better,” he said. He said the cabinet should look into what measures “big and small” their departments could do to help. “We need to be a cost-of-living government, getting that cost of living down, looking at all possible ways of doing that,” the PM said. Meanwhile, a YouGov poll showed Reform’s poll lead has been cut to just two points over the Conservatives, with Labour one point behind. Support for Reform has dropped by a point in the past week to 23%, with the Tories up 2 points to 21% and Labour up a point to 21%. Despite support for his party stalling, Farage today called on Burnham to call a general election. He said: “This man has no mandate whatsoever. He didn’t stand on the 2024 general election manifesto. “You cannot make the ‘biggest changes’ in British politics in 40 years without a mandate from the British people. “And it would be only decent, right and proper to call a general election on that issue and to do it now.” Listen to Commons People, the podcast that makes politics easy.
