Some of the most skilled UFC fighters in the world were left in shock by Song Yadong’s incredible upset knockout over Umar Nurmagomedov earlier today in UFC Shanghai’s main event (full results HERE). Yadong’s knockout surprise was stunning in more than one way. First, the actual knockout itself was incredible. Song timed a perfectly-placed right uppercut as Nurmagomedov dipped his head to the left during a level change. Nurmagomedov has shown a tendency to do this throughout his UFC tenure and Yadong (alongside coach Urijah Faber) took full advantage of it. The fact that Nurmagomedov dropped like a sack of potatoes made the finish even more spectacular. Adding to the fight itself were the betting odds associated with the UFC Shanghai main event. Yadong was not expected to win this weekend against a fighter in Nurmagomedov who many consider to be championship level. Fans haven’t seen Song take that step up in his career yet so there was some hesitation to trust he could get it done. Needless to say, Yadong spoiled a lot of betting slips early Saturday as he flipped the script on Nurmagomedov’s anticipated victory. On top of that, Yadong was fighting on his home soil in China. Yadong fought in Macau this past May as well, but before that he hadn’t competed at home since all the way back in 2018. Chinese fight fans had another chance to see Song perform and they made sure it counted. The atmosphere was absolutely electric, which created an unforgettable scene after Yadong finished Nurmagomedov. The MMA community was left in shock and awe as they had witnessed one of the biggest upsets of the year and one of the biggest upsets in recent UFC bantamweight history.
