The self-professed queen of drag, RuPaul The BBC has confirmed that the current season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK will be the last with the corporation. On Wednesday night, the broadcaster confirmed that Drag Race UK had been axed after eight seasons (as well as three iterations of its international RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs The World format). “As the BBC continues to navigate significant financial pressures and deliver the savings required of us, we have had to make some very difficult choices, none of which have been taken lightly,” a BBC rep said. The spokesperson added that the BBC was “proud” of “this groundbreaking show”, before thanking host and head judge RuPaul, production company World Of Wonder and “everyone involved, both on and off screen”. Drag Race UK launched in 2019, with RuPaul and his right-hand woman Michelle Visage judging queens from around the country alongside Alan Carr, Graham Norton and a crop of rotating guest judges. Over the last eight years, it has helped boost the profiles of queens like Baga Chipz, La Voix, Tayce, Bimini, Tia Kofi, Victoria Scone and the late The Vivienne, who won the inaugural series. The current cast of RuPaul's Drag Race UK The news of the BBC pulling the show comes after the announcement that it would no longer be moving forward with the LGBTQ+ dating shows I Kissed A Boy and I Kissed A Girl. Fortunately, while Drag Race UK will no longer be airing on the BBC, World Of Wonder intends to continue the franchise, beginning with the first ever UK-specific All Stars series, which is expected to debut on the streaming service Wow Presents Plus next year.
