Dolly Parton pictured in 2022 When you think of Dolly Parton, there are many things that could come to mind. There are, of course, her many, many hits, as well as her expansive film career, her generous philanthropy and the distinctive and glamorous image she sported throughout her decades in the spotlight. But to many, the Grammy winner will also be remembered for her unique way with words. Over the course of her career, she became arguably as famous for her inspirational quotes and witty one-liners as she was for hits like 9 To 5, Jolene and I Will Always Love You. Following the news of her death at the age of 80, here are just some of our favourites from the much-loved global icon... “If you want to see the rainbow you gotta put up with the rain.” “It costs a lot of money to look this cheap.” “I’m not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb... and I also know that I’m not blonde.” “People always ask me how long it takes to do my hair. I don’t know, I’m never there.” “Some of my dreams are so big they would scare you.” “I’m one of those people that if its something to eat I’m going to eat the whole thing, If I’m going to be in love I’m going to love you all the way and if my heart’s broken, it’s just shattered all to pieces.” “I never, ever get involved in politics. With politics you are not allowed to be honest. I don’t have time to deal with that. I would rather work with kids.” “I describe my look as a blend of Mother Goose, Cinderella, and the local hooker!” “I make jokes about it, but it’s the truth that I kind of patterned my look after the town tramp. I didn’t know what she was, just this woman who was blonde and piled her hair up, wore high heels and tight skirts. And, boy, she was the prettiest thing I’d ever seen. Momma used to say, ‘Aw, she’s just trash’, and I thought, ‘That’s what I want to be when I grow up. Trash’.” “I like to buy clothes that are two sizes too small and then take them in a little.” “I have little feet because nothing grows in the shade.” “I would never stoop so low as to be fashionable.” “If you talk bad about country music, it’s like saying bad things about my momma. Them’s fightin’ words.” “I had to get rich so I could afford to sing like I was poor again.” “I was the first woman to burn my bra – it took the fire department four days to put it out.” “My boobs are fake, my hair’s fake but what is real is my voice and my heart.” “My weaknesses have always been food and men – in that order.” “I hope people realise that there is a brain underneath the hair – and a heart underneath the boobs.” “I want to be like one of those little fainting goats that get scared and then just fall over. I want to go and go and then drop dead in the middle of something I’m loving to do. And if that doesn’t happen, if I wind up sitting in a wheelchair, at least I’ll have my high heels on.” “If there’s a heaven, I hope to hell I go!” “It’s when you treat people like freaks that you become one yourself.” LIKE US ON FACEBOOK | FOLLOW US ON TWITTER
