Donald Trump speaks during a dinner in the Rose Garden of the White House on Thursday. Donald Trump’s attempts to end the war in Iran are “going nowhere”, according to a BBC expert. Lyce Doucet’s comments came just days after the US president insisted everything was “fine and dandy” and that the conflict would be over in weeks. Doucet, who is the corporation’s chief international correspondent, poured scorn on Trump’s claims that fresh peace talks may be imminent. She told Radio 4’s Today programme: “On the US-Iran front, it’s absolutely going nowhere. There continues to be military escalation as President Trump continues to threaten. “The Axios news agency reported President Trump using that kind of language he’s used time and again; either we’re going to annihilate Iran or we’re going to return to talks.” Trump is due to meet the leaders of countries in the Gulf – which have come under attack from Iran in retaliation for the war – at next week’s United Nations General Assembly in New York. But while similar talks last year helped to bring about a ceasefire in the war in Gaza, Doucet said: “This crisis, in so many ways is so much more complex.
