Philadelphia is embracing innovation by trialing lighter colored pavement to alleviate extreme street temperatures caused by the urban heat island phenomenon. Aimed at protecting vulnerable neighborhoods, preliminary results indicate the pavement maintains lower temperatures, although the air temperature effects are still unclear. Despite facing durability concerns which called for a thicker secondary coat, the city's ongoing research aspires to enhance heat resilience throughout the entire city.
