Hurricane Andrew in 1992 released Burmese pythons into Florida's wild. These snakes had previously entered the state via the exotic pet trade. The Everglades provided an ideal habitat for their survival and proliferation. Their growing numbers significantly reduced indigenous mammal populations in the region. Ongoing management efforts focus on controlling their population numbers.
