(Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Strawweight talents Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson will collide this weekend (Sat., Aug. 15, 2026) inside Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for UFC 330. I like Dern well enough, but she’s a funny case of a contender not improving to become champion. Instead, the division weakened to the point that Dern — flawed as ever — was able to capture the crown. There’s no denying Dern as an aggressive and fun fighter, but the jiu-jitsu master’s title reign definitely feels like a product of circumstance rather than undeniable ability. Where the heck is Zhang Weili again? Robertson, age 31, has been on the roster for nearly a decade now. She’s such an established face that I totally forget her entrance to UFC via The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). Early in her UFC career, Robertson struggled to find consistency, but that changed when she dropped back down to Strawweight in 2023. She’s since won six of seven fights, establishing herself as an elite contender. Her takedowns aren’t particularly consistent, however, which prevents Dern from being a truly unstoppable force in the division. Fortunately, she’s improved considerably on her feet over the years, developing a nice jab to complement her thudding right hand. Dern is an opportunistic fighter who excels at capitalizing on her opponents’ mistakes. Give Dern an inch on the canvas, and she’s going to roll into a sweep or invert on a leg lock. Against a fellow grappler in Robertson, Dern should be engaging often both on the feet and on the canvas, as she’s simply more dangerous in both areas. Standing, I’d like to see Dern taking risks here. Robertson is a functional striker, but her punches come without any real pop. Dern can afford to step deep into her punches and extend combinations more often because the consequences of her lands are much higher. If Dern is taken down because she overcommits on a swing, so what? She’s slick from her back and just won the title because Virna Jandiroba was afraid to engage on the canvas. Dern has to fight with confidence and impose her will, ready to jump on whatever errors Robertson makes in the face of her aggression. How Robertson Wins Robertson is an excellent ground fighter. She chain wrestles better than most of her division, and once on top, Robertson is able to control her opponents, advance position, and do damage. As a result, she has the most submission wins in UFC women’s history. I’ve watched Robertson’s career for almost 10 years now, and so I don’t think it’s fair to suddenly expect her to develop kickboxing. She literally has not won a single UFC fight on the virtue of her striking, so how would it be reasonable to think it happens for the first time in a UFC title fight? Robertson wins this fight on the canvas even if those are dangerous waters to tread. It’s a simple fact that mixed martial arts (MMA) greatly favors the fighter on top, and Robertson is a strong grappler herself. If she minds her hand positioning and posture, Robertson should be able to stay reasonably safe while dropping elbows. Each strike landed chips away at Dern’s vaunted grappling, making Robertson’s control easier to establish. Just take a lesson from Benoit Saint-Denis and avoid diving neck-first into a guillotine in the opening 30 seconds (like this). Dern vs. Robertson Prediction Robertson has improved quite a bit, but it still wasn’t all that long ago she was out-wrestled and out-struck by Tabatha Ricci. I don’t really feel that she has a choice but to engage Dern on the canvas, yet she’ll have trouble getting her down. Dern can counter takedowns well, particularly in the clinch, and it feels likely that Dern’s top position will be quite problematic for Robertson. Then, if the two take some time to trade, Dern is much more likely to land the impactful blows. Robertson can win this fight if she safely and consistently finds a way to top position, but Dern’s advantages in power, jiu-jitsu and athleticism make that a difficult path.
