To help prepare for Makhachev’s ground game, which is responsible for 13 submissions, “The Future” has enlisted the services of former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira. Oliveira holds the UFC record for submissions at 17. “His skills, I just have to run in this camp too much because I have to follow him,” Makhachev told MMA Fighting about his preparations for Garry. “He runs too much. I know his game plan. We always see his fights. He has the same style always. I will try to catch him, take him down, just what I did with my old opponents. Charles is going to teach him how to tap fast. That’s it.” Makhachev submitted Oliveira at UFC 280 back in late 2022. Makhachev (28-1) surrendered his 155-pound title and moved up to welterweight to capture the crown from Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 last fall. He’s currently tied with former middleweight champion Anderson Silva at 16 for longest win streak in UFC history. As for Garry (17-1), he rebounded from a decision loss to the still-injured Shavkat Rakhmonov to win back-to-back fights over ranked contender Carlos Prates and former champion Belal Muhammad.
