While I’d like to think we could all just hang out and laze around reading in the sun, the universe has other plans for us. But if I were to hazard a guess, you might have noticed that your beauty products react quite strangely to the heat. Yep, I’m talking melting – or straight up evaporating – off your face altogether. Even though I wear primer, blush barely lasts my commute before disappearing into the ether, and I’ll be honest: I’m getting sick of it. So I don’t spend the rest of the season looking like someone decided to splash a runny puddle on my face before leaving the house, I decided it was time to call in the big guns. Namely, some advice from celebrity makeup artist Will Grande, whose reactions to viral Love Island beauty moments on TikTok got me thinking about how I should really have a better approach to no-budge beauty. Makeup artist approved tips for sweat-proof summer beauty “There is absolutely nothing cute about spending an hour doing your makeup only for it to slide off before you’ve even had your first iced coffee,” Grande says. Preach. But the key to stopping this landslide is actually easier than you might think. Less is more “The secret isn’t wearing more makeup – it’s actually wearing less,” explains Grande. “When it’s boiling outside, piling on thick layers of foundation is only going to end in disaster. Keep everything nice and light, let each layer settle before adding the next and don’t forget to lock it all in properly.” No touchy Another simple change you can make is to stop touching your face. “I know it’s easier said than done when you’re sweating, but every time you’re wiping your forehead or resting your chin on your hand you’re basically removing your makeup yourself,” says Grande. “Grab some blotting papers instead and leave your glam alone.” Noted. How to apply makeup to stop it slipping “I think people expect these products to work miracles, but they’re only as good as the way you apply them,” Grande explains. Leave it out to dry “The biggest mistake with primer is slapping your foundation straight on top,” he says. “Give it a minute to get tacky first – that’s literally the whole point of it.” A little goes a long way “Powder is another one people go overboard with,” Grande observes. “You don’t need to look like you’ve been dipped in flour! I just press a little into the areas that get shiny, like the forehead, nose and chin, and leave the rest of the skin looking fresh.” Method matters When it comes to setting spray, it turns out there’s a ‘right’ method for applying it. “Don’t just spritz it in one random direction and hope for the best,” Grande says. “Hold it a little away from your face and spray in an X and then a T shape so everything gets covered evenly. “Honestly, if your makeup is melting in this heat, nine times out of ten it’s your technique rather than your products.
