After years on the run, the head of the Kinahan drug cartel and combat sports management company MTK was arrested in Dubai yesterday (Apr. 17, 2026). Actually, we wouldn’t really classify Daniel Kinahan as ‘on the run.’ The Irish gangster left his homeland in the early 2000s to operate the family business out of Spain until 2016, when a series of attempted assassinations convinced him to move to Dubai. And there he’s remained for a decade, seemingly untouchable by international law. What exactly changed on Friday when law enforcement picked Kinahan up is unclear. After investigative outlet Bellingcat released photos of Kinahan at a 971 FC mixed martial arts event in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates explained his presence in the country by simply saying there was no outstanding international warrant issued to them for Kinahan’s arrest. ‼️ 📰 News Boxing power broker and notorious drug trafficker Daniel Kinahan has been arrested in United Arab Emirates#BrunchBoxing pic.twitter.com/QIr97TO2jf — Brunch Boxing (@BrunchBoxing) April 17, 2026 That was technically true somehow, despite the U.S. government issuing a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest. So Irish Gardai got off their asses and petitioned the High Court for a warrant for Kinahan’s arrest. It was granted, and 48 hours later Kinahan was arrested and is now awaiting extradition hearings. Kinahan’s ties to the combat sports world go deeper than just an unfortunate appreciation for regional MMA events. Daniel started management company MTK Global as a way to interact with the sports he loved — boxing, and later mixed martial arts. Over the years MTK Global listed athletes like Tyson Fury and Darren Till as clients, although both distanced themselves from the organization after U.S. sanctions were announced. Those sanctions were pretty effective in driving Kinahan out of public life. One Instagram post featuring Daniel from Tyson Fury after the U.S. announcement was enough to get Fury’s entire family barred from entering America. Despite that, not everyone separated themselves from Kinahan after 2022. When competing for the UFC in 2023, Tunisian fighter Mounir Lazzez repeatedly thanked Daniel Kinahan during interviews for his support. Lazzez left the UFC in 2023 with a 2-2 record and has moved on to bigger things: reports claim the former fighter helps Kinahan run black market Iranian oil tankers to China. What will happen next regarding Kinahan and the drug cartel he’s built over decades is unclear. Was this really just a case where Irish authorities never completed the correct paperwork to get the crime syndicate boss out of Dubai? Or did the UAE remove Kinahan’s protection for some reason as the Middle East makes policy pivots in the face of Iran war upheaval? Whatever the case, there could be ripple effects in the world of boxing and MMA due to Kinahan’s secret ties to numerous organizations, managers, and fighters.
